Beautiful Poison

After discovering the orange rivers in a former coal town poisoned by iron oxide, one artist has an unorthodox idea: to extract the chemical and transform it into pigment for paint.

John Sabraw is a renowned artist who goes caving in waders to extract pollution from rivers and turn chemicals into pigments in a former coal town. Not only does he create artworks exploding with colour, he’s building a multi-million dollar carbon-neutral factory that will expand this process to create paint for industrial use, restoring miles of waterways and cutting carbon in one stroke.


Director Dan Ashby is an award-winning environment journalist who has overseen film, television and audio productions around the world. His focus is on storytelling that transcends traditional climate topics, revealing how the planetary crisis intersects with every part of our lives. He forged his career as a TV correspondent in East Africa and Russia, exposing ivory trafficking networks, dynamite fishing gangs and rosewood logging, before launching Smoke Trail Productions - to tell gripping environmental stories in new ways.

Producer Lucy Taylor is an award-winning environment journalist who has overseen film, television and audio productions around the world. Her focus is on storytelling that transcends traditional climate topics, revealing how the planetary crisis intersects with every part of our lives. She forged his career as a TV correspondent in East Africa and Russia, exposing ivory trafficking networks, dynamite fishing gangs and rosewood logging to tell gripping environmental stories in new ways.

Director of Photography Ed Cartledge is a Doc/Fest-shortlisted filmmaker. He has worked with Sir David Attenborough and other leading figures and produces, directs, shoots and edits for major charities, public sector bodies and academia. In 2021, he decided to return to his roots in documentary-making, teaming up with Smoke Trail Productions to create The Catastrophe Garden - about the mission to bring hydroponics to Syrian refugee camps.
